Teenage Wasteland
'Gone' is Michael Grant's debut novel and the first of a planned six-part series.
The novel will have you hooked immediately, not only because of Grant’s writing style, but also because of the gripping premise of the story. Our main character, Sam, is daydreaming in history class when suddenly his teacher vanishes into thin air. It soon becomes clear not only has Sam’s teacher vanished, but every adult and teenager aged fifteen and over has mysteriously disappeared. Comparisons to Lord of the Flies become almost inevitable as the rival high school cliques now fight for control over the Californian town. Grant however, sets himself apart from the standard ‘kids in control’ premise by capitalising upon the Sci-Fi genre. The story rarely lets up as Grant maintains the momentum throughout the book, through continued intrigue. As the reader seeks answers to the disappearance of the adults, new questions are introduced which keep them hooked until the very end. What is the inexplicable power that Sam holds? And is he alone? Alongside answers to these questions you’ll also be surprised by the level of characterisation, especially for a young adult novel in this genre. Rarely does Grant settle for standard American High School stereotypes, but instead presents us with interesting and realistic characters. Michael Grant shows off his ability to pace, and plot his story as he leaves you eagerly anticipating the sequel. Highly recommended.
