Island Paradise
Northern Irishman Boggs’s book covers in depth the little-known island; from the species of endemic plant, to the traditional greetings of its people.
. Through his wonderful pictures and descriptions of the unique culture and landscape of the obscure island, Boggs leaves the reader with a yearning to visit this magical and historical place. He described how Socotra culture is trying to grasp onto historical traditions, while at the same time trying to deal with the pressures and transformative processes of an increasingly globalized society. Boggs also covers Socotra’s plants and animals’ significance in the environment, and within the people’s traditions and every day life. Through the wonderful images, such as those of the dragon’s blood and frankincense trees, and fascinating description of culture and society, Boggs illustrated the every day lives of the people of Socotra, while at the same time placing them in a historical, anthropological perspective. This book is highly recommended and is a very enjoyable read.
