Irish Tapestry
A book that starts 100m years ago and ends with the O’Neill-Lemass meeting in 1965 might suggest too breathtaking a canter through the story of Mother Ireland.
Yet because of Bardon’s skill at narrative history it does not seem at all hurried and gives us the immediate sense of presence that characterised his standard works on Ulster and Belfast.
Not all the episodes, orginally written for radio, are about battles and politics; many also convey a sense of the ordinary lives of Irish people. The bedside book for all who love the distressful country- or need to pontificate about it.
