Do It: Home Decorating

This is my kind of interior design/DIY manual. The rooms pictured – even those not necessarily to my own taste – are fresh, innovative and modern, and inspired me to take a fresh look at the spaces in my own home.

Broken into five sections; the manual deals with planning, preparation, paints and painting, using wallpaper and interior updates. McAndrew’s planning advice is thoughtful and well-considered. She lays out the basis of a range of contemporary looks - from Country to Vintage Chic, and provides us with guides to the colour palettes, fabrics and accessories common to each. The pictures used to illustrate each of these looks had me drooling and my husband looking decidedly worried! Once you’ve decided on your ‘look’ we move onto preparation – again, the book issues clear and thoughtful advice on everything from stripping wallpaper to sealing damp patches and treating wood. The pictures here may not be as pretty as those in the previous section but they provide excellent practical and often step-by-step instruction. The same is true of the sections dealing with painting and wallpapering. The final section ties up loose ends and provides advice on keeping your home looking up-to-date. Home Decorating is the perfect guide for those looking for inspiration AND practical advice.
