Being Seen
The stories of adults with learning disabilities- and those of their carers- in their own words.
Divided into two sections; the stories of the adults themselves and those of the carers, this deceptively slim volume carries a wealth of information. Told chronologically, these stories subtly trace the development of care for vulnerable adults from the 50s and 60s. The members of ‘Destined’, a local support group for adults with learning disabilities, tell of growing up in a world which expected them to be invisible and of their struggle to become useful, independent members of society with the odds stacked against them. Actually riveting.
